Behind the Blooms
Hi! I'm Katherine, founder and creative director of Novella Blooms.
I've had a special relationship with flowers since I was a little girl. Flowers had a big impact on my upbringing. My mother was an avid gardener and spent countless hours creating and tending to homegrown herbs, plants, and florals. And, having grown up a minister's daughter, I spent innumerable hours peering from the narthex and balcony during baptisms, weddings, and funerals. Whether the occasion was one of joy or sadness, flowers were always there to calm a nervous bride or provide quiet comfort to a grieving family. To this day, I still associate church with the smell of carnations and roses and perfectly placed foliage and lilies.
When I'm not flowering, I'm teaching high school English. So, you can probably imagine how excited I get when some of my favorite authors include florals as important pieces of symbolism within their stories—columbines and violets in Shakespeare's Hamlet, delphiniums and campanulas in Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden, or wildflowers in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice—just to name a few.
I craft all of the floral designs at Novella Blooms (with a helping hand here and there), but I definitely could not accomplish all the other details without some assistance. So . . .
